Southern Poverty Law Center | Portraits

October 23, 2019 by Sonya Revell

Several months back, I was commissioned by the SPLC to make some portraits of 22 yr. old, Hakeem Drane, who had been held in solitary confinement in a Florida prison and was recently released. As reported by the Southern Poverty Law Center “During the afternoon of Sept. 5, 2018, Hakeem Drane was asleep in his disciplinary confinement cell at Lake Correctional Institution – one of the few ways to pass the time in confinement. But the 22-year-old would be stirred […]

Teresa Weintraub | BC Law Alumni

September 7, 2019 by Sonya Revell

Teresa Weintraub—international wealth advisor, mother, Cuban expat, Miami resident, and much more—has a full life, to say the least.  And back in May, I had the opportunity to photograph this busy Boston College Law Alum at her home in Coral Gables.   Mrs. Weintraub is an inspiring figure who has overcome the odds not just to survive, but to flourish. Her family fled Cuba and lost a considerable amount of wealth in the process, settling as one of the many […]

GoFundMe Heroes Campaign

November 18, 2018 by Sonya Revell

For the GoFundMe Heroes Campaign, I had the honor of photographing Luis Garcia, a retired paramedic, and firefighter who spent $40K of his own savings on Narcan. While attending and documenting his class, which is free to the public, I learned a lot about this life-saving Nasal spray that can literally bring people back from the dead after an opioid overdose. (I even received my own dose, which I hope to never have to use.)  After Luis’ class, we had […]

Aldous Bertram | Luxe Style-Maker

November 9, 2017 by Sonya Revell

After a busy summer, (than included dealing with a little hurricane named Irma) I’m finally getting back to the blog! As a regular contributor to Luxe Interiors + Design magazine, I have the good fortune of getting to meet and photograph many talented and interesting artists, designers and curators from Miami to Palm Beach.  That said, I especially love how this recent style-makers spread, of artist/interior designer, Aldous Bertram turned out. For this shoot, we headed up North to photograph […]

A Portrait of Granada Presbyterian for ByFaith Magazine

August 25, 2016 by Sonya Revell

A while back, I got a fun commission from ByFaith magazine, to create portraits of the congregation at Granada Presbyterian Church, for their cover story on diversity.  My assistant, Dragi and I set up a make-shift studio inside Granada’s sanctuary, in Coral Gables, FL and with some help, gathered and photographed as many members as we could over the course of one day.  Everyone at Granada was incredibly welcoming and it was wonderful to meet so many families and individuals, […]

Portrait of Alexander Krivoshiew for Luxe Interiors + Design

April 10, 2016 by Sonya Revell

As an editorial photographer, often times I photograph a story or a profile that I’m really excited to share, but then rather than putting it out into the world right away, I have to wait…for months…until it’s published.  That was the case with metal sculpture artist, Alexander Krivoshiew’s profile for the current issue of Luxe Interiors + Design.  And to add to my excitement even more, the photo editor informed me that rather than running it as the usual four […]

Quiet Portraits of a Family

September 12, 2015 by Sonya Revell

I was recently commissioned to make some portraits of the Tavakolis, a terrific family with whom I’ve collaborated in the past.  I’ve always had a great experience photographing this lovely family, as they have a shared enthusiasm for the craft, an openness to ideas, and well… they’re just all-around good people. For this shoot, we met up at the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa, where my assistant, Dragi and I set up a make-shift studio in the Tavakolis’ room. […]

The French Horn – Conceptual Portraits

May 13, 2015 by Sonya Revell

Stagnation sucks.  As a commercial photographer, I find it so important to continually challenge myself by evolving my style and technique.  The best way that I’ve found to keep stagnation from setting in, is to work on personal photography projects as often as I can. For my latest self-assignment, I wanted to create a conceptual portrait within a nightscape.  Since I love photographing performers, I approached the amazingly talented gypsy/jazz band, The French Horn, about collaborating.  They were open to […]

Portrait of Peter Gary of Pinnacle Advertising for Adweek

November 13, 2014 by Sonya Revell

My first step with any editorial portrait assignment is always research.  I look for pictures of the subject, try to read up on his/her background and if I’m shooting in/around the subject’s office (or a location I’ve never been to), I try to scope that out as well. When Adweek approached me to photograph Peter Gary, CEO of Pinnacle Advertising in Boca Raton, I went right to Google.  Between visits to Pinnacle’s website and google images, I concluded that the agency had […]
