New Lifestyle Photography for a New Year

February 3, 2016 by Sonya Revell

I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions.  I do, however, like to kick off each new year with a portfolio shoot (which superstition dictates must be completed within the first week of January). Unfortunately here in Miami, 2016 started off with lots and lots of rain.  So while my inspiration was telling me to do a lifestyle shoot at the beach, El Niño seemed to be laughing in my face. Thankfully Laura, my styling cohort and I kept a close […]

Roadtrip/Mi Familia

August 13, 2014 by Sonya Revell

A few weeks ago I packed up my car and drove to my Motherland-  Kentucky. Along the way, I stopped in Birmingham, AL to visit my nine-months-pregnant cousin, Valerie and her family. While there, I took the opportunity to photograph Valerie’s very photogenic children. This is Tiziri. I asked her to pout and she obliged. I also made some portraits of my cousin’s husband, Djamel (with kids, Aksil and Luiza).  These are for a personal project, focused on immigrants, that […]

Vintage, Horses, Blonds…OH MY!

December 2, 2013 by Sonya Revell

I grew up in Kentucky.  So like it or not, horse culture is sort of in my blood.  Like a good Kentuckian, I took horse-back riding lessons in the second grade and I make the annual trip home every Derby.  (Although, funny enough, I’ve never actually attended the Derby.  I, instead, go to the Oaks- more of a local tradition.)  And I never miss out on a piece of Derby pie.  So when I was approached to make some portraits […]

The Watcher in the Woods

February 5, 2011 by Sonya Revell

So lately I’ve been trying to reference more of my childhood influences in my work.  And oddly enough, I’m beginning to realize just how much I was influenced by a hand-full of scary children’s movies  released in the early 80’s.The two that top the list are Something Wicked This Way Comes, based on the novel by Ray Bradbury and The Watcher in the Woods, staring an older Betty Davis and Kyle Richards (Paris Hilton’s aunt).  I’ve asked around to see […]

White Christmas in the Bluegrass

February 3, 2011 by Sonya Revell

How many people can say that they grew up on a Christmas tree farm?  Taylor Swift and Me.  That might be it.  Okay, okay, I’m sure it’s not that rare and I didn’t really grow up there.  I did, however, spend a lot of time running and playing, building fires and roasting marshmallows, learning the names of all the flowers and trees, and creating amazing memories on my Grandparent’s 265 acre farm in Wolf Creek, Kentucky. Back in December, I […]

Lions, Tigers, Performance Artists, OH MY!

October 13, 2010 by Sonya Revell

So I’ve been slacking (more than a little) on this whole blog thing.  Therefore I’ll be playing catch up over the next couple of days. Below is my tear sheet from Issue #21 of  JPEG Magazine, which came out a few months ago. I made this image back when I lived in Miami and get asked about it often.  No, that is not a statue.  It is, indeed, a monster of a performance artist.  The story of how this image […]

Editing Your Own Work for a Portfolio Can be Tricky….and I Need Help!

August 11, 2010 by Sonya Revell

I often develop an emotional attachment to certain images, while growing tired of others after staring at them for so long.  I also sometimes have trouble connecting the dots and creating a cohesive flow from one image to the next, especially in a printed portfolio.  I’ve gotten some great advice and help with editing already (which is how I got this far) but its still not quite finished.  So since I need to stop procrastinating and get this new version […]
